JV girls register ninth straight win

Monday night against Turlock Christian, Mariposa’s junior varsity girls’ basketball team rolled up its ninth straight win, and pushed its Southern Athletic League mark to a spotless 8-0.

The Lady Grizzlies trounced the Eagles, 41-18, paced by Brittany Binnewies’ 13 points. Sammy Chambers chipped in 9 points, and Kiely Johnson added 4 in the rout.

Mariposa finally found the mark at the charity stripe and shot 60 percent. Amber Augustine was 4-for-4. Turlock Christian left a lot of points at the line, hitting just 6 of 24 free throws.

Assistant coach and Athletic Director Loyd Hobby said, “If you can’t hit free throws, you can’t win games.”

Last Thursday in Waterford, the Lady Grizzlies topped the Wildcats, 37-25, for their seventh SAL win.

Binnewies bucketed 12 points, followed by Johnson with 11, and Nicole Wanner chipped in 8.

Thursday evening will be a key contest in the Lady Grizzlies league campaign. They will host Le Grand at 6 p.m. in a rematch of the overtime game they played just two weeks ago.
