The irony of it all
When John Kerry was running for president in 2004, there were some in Massachusetts who thought he just might win. In order to prevent republican Governor Mitt Romney from appointing a republican to replace him, the veto-proof, democrat majority in the legislature changed the law. The governor would be stripped of his power of appointment and a special election would be held.
If the democrats had just left the law alone, or changed it back, then the current democrat governor of Massachusetts could have simply appointed a democrat to replace the late Ted Kennedy and said replacement could have served until the general election in November, thereby preserving the 60- vote super majority in the senate.
Instead, Massachusetts is sending a republican to the US Sentat for the first time since 1972, all because the democrats wanted to make sure that such a thing couldn’t happen.
What goes around, comes around.
