James E. Hoppers, DDS
James E. Hoppers, a long-time resident of Santa Barbara, passed away Nov. 29, 2010. He was 92. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather as well as a respected member of this community and parish.
Born July 13, 1917, in Franklin County, Ill. to Melvin and Nellie Hoppers, he experienced life’s setbacks and responsibilities at an ear age. His father was killed in a coal mining explosion when he was 3-years-old. His mother was left to raise three children: Lauretta, age 5; Vernon, age 1; and himself. The foundation for his love and faith in God was being set.
Jim excelled in athletics and was recruited by several schools to play football. He chose Illinois Wesleyan University. Upon graduation, he was invited to play professional football for the Chicago Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers. He met and married his future wife, Eileen Myers. They were married on June 6, 1939, the day of his college graduation.
As World War II erupted, he became a commanding officer in the US Navy. After the war, he concentrated on dentistry, where he taught at USC and the University of North Carolina. His love of working with individuals and families led him to establish a successful private practice in Santa Barbara.
He was active in the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Club, as well as Catholic Charities, Handicapables and many local charities.
Jim was preceded in death by a son born prematurely; and his loving wife of 54 years, Eileen Hoppers. He is survived by his three children, James T. Hoppers (Theodosia) of Sacramento; Mary Herzber (Jerry) of Santa Barbara and David T. Hoppers of Santa Barbara; and eight grandchildren.
Services were held in Santa Barbara in December. Arrangments were under the direction of the Welch-Ryce- Haider Funeral Chapels.
