Habitat prepares to select its first family

The concept for Habitat for Humanity (HFH) of Mariposa County came from a small group of dedicated Mariposans who began meeting in January 2006. Their work, which was supported by churches, businesses, and civic groups of Mariposa, led to HFH of Mariposa County becoming a full-fledged Habitat affiliate in March 2008.

With their eye on the goal of building simple, decent, affordable homes with partner families, they raised money and built a data base of over 400 names of volunteers over the next two years.

Now HFH of Mariposa is ready to select its first partner family. Applications for individuals, couples, or families will be available at a meeting at the Mariposa Lutheran Church (4469 Highway 49 South) on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m. At this meeting inter- ested parties will learn the criteria for becoming a "partner family."

Applicants will need to meet certain income requirements, including the ability to make a small down payment and to pay a no-interest mortgage over approximately 20 years. They must currently be living in substandard housing and be willing to work with HFH in a long-term partnership. Applicants will be considered if they have lived in Mariposa County for at least one year.

HFH of Mariposa County is already seeking a second parcel of land on which to build. For more information about the application meeting or about how to become involved with HFH here, call the HFH office at 966-7444.
