Mariposa’s Wichmann lands Fresno State Bulldog ride
CODY WICHMANN
Mariposa County High School standout Cody Wichmann’s future has been painted, and it’s a pretty picture. Last weekend the 6’5” 275- pound senior was offered a four-year college scholarship by Fresno State’s head football coach, Pat Hill.
Wichmann has had a stellar athletic career playing four years of varsity basketball, and three years of varsity football, receiving All-Southern League awards on the way. His most recent was Co-Outstanding Lineman for the 2009-10 football season. His is currently the favorite for the SAL’s most valuable player award in basketball.
His mother, Tally Allison, couldn’t be more pleased. “Cody is so excited after meeting with Coach Hill, Coach Baxter, and Fresno State’s impressive athletic and academic support staff,” Allison said. “”We are excited beyond belief for Cody and are so thirlled he has been offered this scholarship to Fresno State.”
His father, Mike Wichmann, is also happy. “They have made him the offer, and he is committed to going there,” Mike Wichmann said. “They stress academics, and I’m happy about that.”
Cody’s basketball coach for the last four years, varsity head coach Trace DeSandres, said, “I think it is very exciting for him and very exciting for our school because he gets to represent MCHS, just like his predessor, Logan Mankins. We’re all really happy for him.”
Although he has only coached him for the past two seasons, MCHS head football coach Bob Kelly said, “He’s just scratched the surface of his potential, and I’m really excited for him.”
“This is such a good match,” Allison said of Fresno State’s program. “Although he’ll always be a loyal Grizzly, and credits his home for this great opportunity, his excitement for the future is huge.”
Cody will make it official some time in February on the NCAA’s designated signing day.
