GAZETTE PHOTO BY JILL BALLINGER Wednesday morning MCHS coaches and Athletic Director Loyd Hobby rescheduled Tuesday night’s cancelled Southern Athletic League match against arch-rival Le Grand. The teams will meet tonight to make up the games that were cancelled on Tuesday due to the massive power outage that blackened the entire county and cancelled all three boys’ games.

Last Thursday Mariposa ran roughshod over Turlock Christian’s Eagles to post their second Southern Athletic League win, 80-38.

The Grizzlies raced to a 17-9 first quarter lead without the services of starting senior center Cody Wichmann who was in Fresno meeting with Bulldog football recruiters. By Sunday, Wichmann was offered a 4- year ride to play football for coach Pat Hill.

Turnovers plagued Mariposa in a sloppy second period and Turlock Christian closed the gap to 30-26 by the half.

“Our intensity level in the second half really made the difference,” said head coach Trace DeSandres.

The Grizzlies exploded for 28 third quarter points while the Eagles could only pour 3 points through the bucket and Mariposa held a commanding 58-29 bulge going in the the last stanza.

“In the second half we transitioned really well at both ends of the court, and they just couldn’t keep up,” DeSandres said.

Pierce Chaney led Mariposa in the scorebook with 14 points, followed closely by Richard Ballinger and Damon Wichas, both with 13. Jeremiah Baca and Drake Long both added 6 points, and Kevin Shenk paced Mariposa on the boards with 6 rebounds.

The Grizzlies travel to Waterford on Friday to face the Wildcats for the first time this year. Their next game is at Delhi on Wednesday, Jan. 20, followed by winter homecoming on Jan. 22.
