Crazy weather causes problems

Storm number 5 is on the way

Yesterday’s strong winds and heavy rain created a myriad of problems for Mariposa County law enforcement, emergency personnel and road crews. There were dozens of calls to the Sheriff’s Office of downed trees, power lines and even a roof that blew off a house.

Blustery winds dropped trees from Coulterville to Cathey’s Valley. Power lines were down in the Lake Don Pedro area and a house in the Bear Valley area sustained damage after a strong gust ripped the awning from it. There were also dozens of small rockslides on Highway 140, Highway 49 and some county roads. None was large enough to prompt road closures.

Things should improve after today’s storm finally winds down on Friday. The county is, however, bracing for another round of heavy rain, possible thunderstorms and lowering snow levels. Snow fell in Jerseydale, Lushmeadows and Ponderosa Basin on Wednesday, and the National Weather Service is predicting several inches at elevations above 2,500 feet today.
