GAZETTE PHOTO BY DAN TUCKER In just their second Southern Athletic League outing of the season, Mariposa’s junior varsity girls’ squad clobbered visiting Waterford Monday night 49-17, in a contest that was a runaway from the opening tip-off.

“Our defense scrambled to the ball pretty well, and our passing is improving, so I am pleased with our progress so far,” said assistant coach and MCHS Athletic Director Loyd Hobby.

Kiely Johnson poured 12 points through the net in the first quarter to pace the Lady Grizzlies in the scorebook for the game.

Last Saturday, the JVs whipped Buhach Colony in a make-up match, 39-17. Mariposa held a 29-12 advantage at the intermission, and never looked back.

Sammy Chambers hit for 12 points, all in the first half as Hobby substituted freely. “That was Sammy’s best game so far,” Hobby praised.

Bailey Edmundson contributed 8 points, while Nicole Wanner, Amber Augustine, and Jocelyn Barrington each hit for 4.

MCHS will host Turlock Christian in a key SAL contest Thursday evening.
