Child care worker busted for smoking pot with teenagers
A woman who works as a child care provider has been arrested for providing marijuana to a minor. Genei Baker of Mariposa allegedly smoked pot with two teenage girls at her home, and one of them ended up at John C. Fremont Hospital’s emergency room.
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s report indicates that a deputy was sent to the hospital to investigate a person under the influence of a drug. The girl told the deputy that she was at the hospital because she smoked pot at her friend’s house with Baker. The friend’s mother was home at the time but was asleep.
The girls were 13 and 16- years-old. Baker listed her occupation at a child care provider at the time of her arrest.
The girls got the pot from the mother’s stash, because the daughter had seen her mom put it away. The girl told deputies that this was the second time she had smoked pot. The first time, she said, was just before Christmas, when she asked her mother if she could try it. She said her mother said yes and smoked it with her. The child said her mother said she could only smoke pot if she did it with her.
The mother corroborated the child’s story, saying the girl asked to smoke pot “because her grades had improved.” She said if her daughter was going to smoke pot, she wanted to supervise her.
Baker initially denied the allegations to investigators, but eventually recanted those denials. She said she knew the girls were smoking. “Kids are kids, and they’re going to do it anyway,” she told deputies. Baker was booked into the Mariposa County Jail.
The report has been forward to the Mariposa County District Attorney’s Office. It is unclear if charges will be filed against the mother. The juvenile who sought medical attention was not seriously harmed.
