Merry Mountain Christmas parade and events rescheduled
Last weekend’s heavy rain put a stop to two annual events that help ring in the holiday season. Late Saturday morning, the Mariposa County Chamber of Commerce decided to cancel the Merry Mountain Christmas parade and subsequent events.
The parade has been rescheduled for this Saturday, Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. All previously scheduled post parade activities are also rescheduled to happen at the Courthouse as follows: DJ/seasonal music and vendors beginning at 2 p.m., parade trophies will be awarded at 4 p.m., the bonfire is at 5 p.m. and Santa Claus arrives at 6 p.m. A free raffle for two bicycles will take place at 8 p.m. All kids who visit Santa will receive a raffle ticket for a bike and goodie bag.
The Lions Club will provide free hot dogs and beverages.
When all was said and done, and the sun rose on Monday morning, some areas of Mariposa County had more than six inches of rain in the gauge. According to the National Weather Service, the Jerseydale reporting station had 6.32 inches of rain from Friday to Sunday afternoon. That elevation also had some snow overnight Saturday and early Sunday.
The Briceburg area had 4.08 inches of rain during the same period. The county’s lowest rainfall total was in Cathey’s Valley at 2.36 inches. December rainfall is now well above normal.
There were plenty of flooded roadways and minor rockslides as a result of the storm. None of the effects closed any roads in the County.
The coming weekend looks like it will be dry, however, and seasonally cool. There is no rain in the immediate forecast.
