Snow closes schools, prompts chain control

Bulk of storm's intensity yet to arrive

The snow began falling, as predicted, in the higher elevation of Mariposa County early this morning. As such, the Mariposa County Unified School District first called a two-hour delay to the start of school, but later changed that as conditions worsened.

At about 7 a.m., MCUSD Director of Transportation Bob Morse said schools, except Yosemite Valley and El Portal Schools, are closed today. “It looks like it’s going to get worse before it gets better,” Morse said early Monday morning.

Many county roads are under chain control, as well. Greeley Hill Road and the Tip Top/Triangle Road areas have R-2 designations at this time. So far, Highways 140 and 49 are not under any restriction.

The National Weather Service predicts the heaviest precipitation to arrive this afternoon. It may linger into the nighttime hours before clearly. Temperatures are expected to plummet to the 20s on Wednesday morning.
Dry weather is expected for Tuesday and Wednesday, but more rain in forecast for Thursday through Sunday.
