THE JUNIOR VARSITY TEAM FINISHED 2-3 IN SOUTHERN ATHLETIC LEAGUE PLAY. Mariposa’s junior varsity football team picked up its second Southern Athletic League win of the season with a 40-18 win over Delhi’s Hawks last Friday night. It was the young Grizzlies’ second straight win, and they finished the season at 2-3 in SAL play.

Cody Stitt opened the scoring for Mariposa with a 7-yard burst in the first quarter to give the Grizzlies a 6-0 advantage. A pair of second quarter touchdowns stretched Mariposa’s lead after the Hawks battled back to knot the contest at 6-6.

Derek Nady scored from 60 yards out, and Stitt added another 6 points on an 80-yard play to push the Grizzlies’ lead to 20-6 at the intermission.

Nady scored again from 25 yards out, and James Palmer returned an interception 25 yards to paydirt to ice the contest in the third quarter and put the Grizzlies in front, 32-12, going into the final period.

Mariposa added 8 points in the fourth when Stitt notched his third touchdown of the game on a 4-yard plunge. The Grizzlies converted on the 2- point PAT to reach an even 40 points, and Delhi added a solo score to bring it to the final 40- 18.

The Grizzlies dominated in the rushing game with three running backs eclipsing the 100-yard mark. Stitt finished with 181 yards for the game, followed by Nady with 120. M.J. Padua rambled for 103 yards.

“It was great to see the kids finish with a win,” said JV coach Danny Ellis.”I hope it gives our kids a little confidence for next year and going forward.”
