Superbowl brings in $120,000 to Mariposa

BY JILL BALLINGER GAZETTE EDITOR

The first weekend in November was a huge boost for the local economy, mostly due to the Mariposa Youth Football Superbowl. Bob Kirchner, the organizer of the event reported to the board of supervisors on Tuesday morning. He said that while the numbers are preliminary, they are very promising.

Restaurants reported to Kirchner that during the 48-hour period of Nov. 6 through 8, they did $35,000 in business. Motels reported a $28,000 weekend, and gift shops, markets and gas sales took in a whopping $62,000.

Kirchner said one business owner told him that in 15 years in business, they “had never had such a successful weekend.”

The event total $120,000 in cash receipts for Mariposa, a boost the shoulder season could use. Kirchner said the County should continue to pursue such events in the future.

“We all saw the dream when we believed,” Kirchner told the board. “And wasn’t it grand? Wasn’t it super?”

Kirchner said guests were overjoyed, and the league is interested in coming back again. “All said how warm they felt in our town,” he told the board. “I didn’t think it would turn out like it did. It’s nice to have an event like this flourish.”

Cann and other supervisors agreed. “It was a great vision for Mariposa. You’ve opened the door and shared the potential,” Cann told Kirchner.

The organizer, however, credited the community with getting behind the effort. “Little things came through,” he said. “Over and over and over again, when we met an obstacle, the community met it.”
