Summerville ran off to a 25-17 advantage in the first set, and then swept through the second, 25-18, and third, 25-18, for the 3-0 victory.

“We just had an off game and didn’t play up to our standards,” said head coach Debbie Leonard. “Summerville is good. They are a very fast team and run a lot of quick sets, and they block a lot, which we aren’t used to seeing in our league.”

Mariposa’s spikers whipped Le Grand in their final Southern Athletic League match to earn a share of the league title. Le Grand handily trounced Central Catholic Tuesday evening in its first round contest, 3-0.

Senior Morgan Foley paced the Lady Grizzlies with 7 kills and 8 digs. Brooke Earling added 8 assists, and Patricia Schellentrager finished with 3 blocks and 1 kill.

Brook Barrett registered 5 digs, and Khrissy Schellentrager pitched in with 3 kills and 1 block.

Tricia Middleton had 3 kills, Martha Bertrand added 3 kills and a block, and Emily Darcy posted 5 assists from her setter’s slot.

“We didn’t hit the ball well,” Leonard said.”We had a lot of balls go into the net.”

Mariposa will lose four seniors to graduation in Foley, Patricia Schellentrager, Barrett, and Darcy along with foreign exchange student Bertrand. However, Leonard will be able to back fill with members of the junior varsity team that was unbeaten in SAL play.

“Overall, I was proud of my team. We improved a lot over the season. We stuggled through a tough preseason, and then they finally started putting it together. When we played well together, great things happened, and we were co-champs in league, so it was a good season.”

Mariposa players dominated the all-league selections for volleyball, as well. Foley was named the league’s most valuable player. Schellentrager, Darcy and Bertrand also received allleague honors.
