Lee Shackelton
Lee Shackelton, born May 13, 1929, to Fay and Freman Shackelton, passed away peacefully Nov. 7 in the presence of his wife, Ti Shackelton; his sister, Marilyn Birkett of Mt. Shasta; three children, Steve Shackelton, Mary Lee Shackelton-Moore and Jim Shackelton; daughters-in-law, Jane and Monica Shackelton; sonin law, Steve Moore; and his eight grandchildren all of Mariposa.
Lee was born in Oakland and graduated from California College of the Arts. He and Ti married in 1953 and spent their life together creating strong family values and precious memories that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Lee spent his life serving his country both as a soldier in the United States Army and as a park ranger for the National Park Service. His park service career took him to Sequoia Kings Canyon, Death Valley, Hawaii Volcano and Yosemite National Parks. During his career in Yosemite, he was the chief of law enforcement from 1971 to 1992, before retiring to the community of Mariposa.
Leland remained active in his retirement, enjoying activities such as writing short stories and working as a private investigator. He was also an active member in many corporations and clubs such as Lions Club and Rotary. He was a man of many talents of which included his abilities as an elaborate storyteller, artist, singer and chef.
He was a man well-known in his community and will be greatly missed by all of his friends and family who knew him and loved him deeply, feeling blessed to have known such a wonderful man.
The rosary will be held at Mariposa Funeral Home on Friday, Nov. 13 at 5 p.m. Viewing will follow from 6 to 8 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 14, the funeral service will take place at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 10 a.m. A reception will follow at 1 p.m. at the Casto Winery on Highway 49 North.
