Two inmates at CAL FIRE’s Sierra Conservation Center at Mt. Bullion made a daring escape on Tuesday night, apparently to a waiting getaway car. Officials at the camp issued a bulletin about the escape early Wednesday morning.

According to the bulletins, Gerald Lavell Turner, 24, and Richard Andrew Green, 27, were last seen about 9:10 p.m. on Tuesday night. They may be wearing gray sweats, but are believed to have had a change of clothing. There were reportedly picked up by a woman named “Amanda” in a red Volkswagen Jetta.

Both are from Southern California and are serving time on crimes that are far from non-violent. For the most part, inmates at camps like Mt. Bullion are felons who have been convicted of crimes that are property or drug related. That does not appear to be the case with Turner and Green.

Turner, who is also known as Mike Lavell Turner, is a six-foot tall, black male who weighs about 165 pounds. He has tattoos on his right shoulder. He is serving a five-year term for sec- ond degree robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Green, also a black man, is 6’3” tall and weighs 140 pounds. He has a known affiliation with the Crips street gang. Green, who also goes by Shawn Joseph Anderson, is serving a nine-year term for being a felon in possession of a firearm and assault with a firearm. He has tattoos on his neck, both arms, chest, face and abdomen.

Camp officials did not say if the men were considered to be armed or dangerous. One officer said he believes they are long gone from the Mariposa County area.

Mariposa County Sheriff’s Deputies are assisting the Department of Corrections in the search. Captain Joel Bibby said he too believes the two men are far away from Mariposa by now. This is the first time inmates have escaped from the camp since it transitioned to an adult facility from a youth camp several years ago.

The duo seems to have spent some time planning its escape. Officials believe a woman was waiting to pick them up, although the exact location of that pick-up was not released. They also chose a perfect night with a full moon to light the way.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of these two men is asked to call the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office at 966-3615.
