Baker has missed yet another court appearance. This time, however, he has a doctor’s note. Baker, the president of Sierra Telephone, has yet to be arraigned on charges of lewd conduct with a minor under 14.
Baker turned himself in to Fresno police in October. Since that time, he has missed every single scheduled court appearance on the matter. His attorney says he is extremely ill and has trouble breathing.
Baker’s attorney, Richard Berman, provided the Fresno County Superior Court with a doctor’s note on Nov. 3. Berman said his client is dealing with recurring pneumonia and has a tube in his throat that allows him to breathe.
Judge Houry Sanderson, who originally issued a bench warrant for the 82-year-old Baker when he missed his first court date, set an arraignment date of Nov. 17. She said either Baker shows up, or arrangements will be made to conduct the proceedings in Baker’s hospital room.
The hospital where Baker has allegedly been admitted in recent weeks remains unknown. Berman said his client was released on Sunday after two weeks there.
Baker faces felony charges in a bizarre child molestation and black mail case that allegedly took place in May, 2007. Officials in Contra Costa County are also investigating a similar allegation against Baker that occurred around the same time. No charges have been filed in that matter.
