MES will observe Veterans' Day
On Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 8:45 a.m. join the students of Mariposa, Mariposa veterans and their families in their 14th annual traditional observance of Veterans’ Day. During the 30- minute ceremony on the Mariposa Elementary School upper field, students in the MCHS and MES Bands will perform patriotic music.
School students will give commemorative speeches. A combined color guard of all services will present arms, raise the American flag, and pledge allegiance, lower the flag and hear “Taps.” The final moment will be a 21-gun salute.
Originally, Armistice Day was held in the highest place of honor in England (Westminster Abbey), in France (the Arc de Triomphe), and in the United States (Arlington National Cemetery). The ceremony was on Nov. 11, giving universal recognition to the ending of World War I fighting at 11 a.m., Nov. 11, 1918. This was the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
Local residents dedicate this particular ceremony to the heroes of Sept. 11 and to American troops presently overseas. Although the children will celebrate on Nov. 10, because there is no school on the Nov. 11 Veterans’ Day, everyone can all show patriotism in this ceremony.
