Fair competitors claim prizes

The many winners of the various categories at the Mariposa County Fair have been announced. There were some dramatic moments, as usual, during the saddle roping competition, but perhaps the best competition of the fair was the junior team cattle penning.

Juniors Jake Swift, 7, and Gauge Butler, 8, stole the show. Both boys have long family histories in both Mariposa County and the fair’s horse events.

The whole grandstand was cheering them on, hoping officials wouldn’t blow the whistle before the boys got the cattle penned. They didn’t, and the duo penned all three cattle.

Leslie Foley of the Mariposa County Fair, said watching them “made her whole weekend.” The entire fair was buzzing with the story for the rest of the day and into Monday.
