Saturday, Aug. 7, at Coulterville Park, at the Shindig, was a fun time. Many wonderful and good people were in attendance, including many volunteers from the chamber of commerce. It hardly seems possible Ashley Marie Sala has been gone for three years already, taken so quickly and unexpectedly. On a day when most of the latest high school graduates were enjoying a day at the fair, home from their first weeks at college, Ashley was on life support in a Fresno hospital. Her mom, Sandy, in surgery for a neck injury.

Catnip Society, Inc. received a $7,438 grant from PetSmart Charities recently to expand its spay/neuter program and offer free spay/neuter services for feral and free roaming cats in and around Mariposa. The service through this grant will include ear-tip (feral marker) and rabies vaccination.

The 2010 Mariposa County Fair Horse Show is in the history books once again, and organizers say it was a great success. There were 39 competitors in the Aug. 21 show and gymkhana. Merced County Fair Rodeo Queen Brittney Hart was on hand to pass out awards.

The open youth showmanship winner was Tiffany Nance, and open senior showmanship winner was Jocelynn Barrington.

Christina White, 48, of Mariposa passed unexpectedly into the arms of the Lord on Aug. 25. She was born Nov. 13, 1961.

Jack W. Vaughn was born Dec. 29, 1932, and passed away Aug. 25 at Oak Terrace Care Facility in Soulsbyville.

Jack was born in Bakersfield, to Frank Lester and Clarabelle Fulwiler Vaughn. They lived in Hanford, where he attended Hanford High School, excelling in track, football, and basketball.

The Mariposa Rotary Club has announced that its annual Mollie Suh Yaley Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Sept. 11, at the Sierra Meadows Country Club. All proceeds from the tournament are dedicated to the Mollie Suh Yaley Scholarship Fund, which is administered by the Mariposa Rotary Club.

Although Mariposa’s varsity boys’ soccer squad has opened the season with backto back defeats, head coach Adam Finney remains optimistic. “We’ve got some pretty good talent, but we’ve got a lot of work to do. I’m pretty optimistic about the upcoming league season,” Finney said Tuesday afternoon after his charges fell to visiting Bret Harte, 8-5.

In last Saturday’s scrimmage at Denair, Mariposa’s junior varsity football team stood shoulders above the competition.

The young Grizzlies mauled Turlock Christian, Denair, and Gustine enroute to scoring eight times and never yielding a touchdown.

Spikers begin year in very close contests

Last week the Mariposa County High School varsity girls’ volleyball team began its season. Friday night the Lady Grizzlies downed Livingston in their home opener, but Monday fell to Summerville in three games.

Tuesday evening’s defeat at the hands of Yosemite High School was even tougher to swallow. It took the Badgers four games to send Mariposa packing.
