About Us

The Mariposa Gazette is the oldest weekly newspaper in the State of California of continuous publication. On Jan. 20, 2004 it turned 150 years old, having never missed an issue. The Gazette is one of the last remaining privately owned newspapers, not operated by any outside parent company or chain. The newspaper's statement on the masthead is "Locally Owned-Community Oriented." There are dozens of awards lining the walls, including those from the United States Congressional Record, resolutions from the California State Senate, California State Assembly, Mariposa County Board of Supervisors, and trophies and plaques from the California Newspaper Publishers Association's "Better Newspaper Contests."

The editorial content is, in a word, local. There is no other source for readers to find what is going on in the county's schools, how the local sports teams fared, what crimes were committed and what punishment was determined, where the wildland fires occurred and what was destroyed, how many people were injured in any given accident, what the weather forecast holds, what other residents think and believe, and in general, what is the "pulse" of the county.

The Mariposa Gazette is the only privately-owned weekly newspaper in the Sierra with its own complete printing facility. It is totally self-contained and no out-sourcing is required to complete production There are "print windows" available for any sort of web press printing job, and shipment to any location is readily available.

The major advertisers that have selected the Mariposa Gazette as their means of communicating with the Mariposa County market include: Von's, Long's Drug, Albertson's, Big T Supermarkets, Carquest Auto Stores, Tires & More, NAPA Auto Parts, McDonald's, Pizza Factory, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Big O Tires, Table Mountain Casino, and more.

The Mariposa Gazette supports over 40 local organizations, both financially, and with the contribution of free space for a wide assortment of events and fund raisers from volunteer fire department pancake breakfasts to Little League tryouts and everything in between. Our commitment to the communities we serve, including Greeley Hill, Coulterville, Bootjack, Jerseydale, Lushmeadows, El Portal, Cathey's Valley, Hornitos, Yosemite National Park, Mt. Bullion, Bear Valley, Mariposa, Midpines, Woodland, Wawona, Fish Camp, Woodland, Hunters Valley, Raymond, Lake Don Pedro, and Ponderosa Basin, does not go unnoticed as our subscription base continues to climb weekly, and our restocking of stores and vending machines is almost constant.

The Mariposa Gazette is recognized as the Official Newspaper of Mariposa County, by a decree of the Board of Supervisors, and as such, it is the historical record of the entire county.
